How do electric motors affect marine biodiversity?
Electric motors do not disturb marine biodiversity because they do not produce any hydrocarbon emissions and operate silently. Their absence of direct greenhouse gas emissions and their low noise impact contribute to the preservation of marine habitats and to minimize disturbances for sensitive marine fauna. Thus, electric motors play a positive role in the conservation and preservation of marine biodiversity compared to thermal engines.
Performance & Efficacité
Are electric boat motors reliable?
Electric boat motors are very reliable because of their simplified design: they have around 100 times fewer moving parts than a combustion engine, which reduces wear and requires less maintenance. They have no translational parts, only rotating parts, which significantly reduces wear.
Installation & Maintenance
What is a retrofit?
The transformation of a thermal vehicle (car, boat, bus...) into an electric or hybrid vehicle, also called retrofit, involves the replacement of the combustion engine by an electric motor or the integration of a hybrid system. This includes installing batteries, an electric motor, controllers, and other components needed to provide electric propulsion. This process reduces greenhouse gas emissions while increasing the vehicle's fuel efficiency.
Installation & Maintenance
What maintenance is required for an electric boat motor?
The maintenance of an electric boat motor includes a complete overhaul every 20,000 hours of navigation. It can be carried out in your shipyard (subject to partnership), without the need to be put out of the water. It is recommended that you check the water/water exchanger visually every year to ensure that it is not obstructed.
Installation & Maintenance
How often should an electric motor be maintained?
The frequency of maintenance of an electric motor depends on several factors, including the intensity of use and environmental conditions. In general, a complete overhaul is recommended every 20,000 hours of navigation.
Installation & Maintenance
How do you install an electric motor on a boat?
The installation of the electric motor is taken care of in the project estimate. We collaborate with numerous shipyards to equip your boat either directly in your usual yard, or in the one closest to your home port, thus ensuring an efficient and professional installation. So you don't have to worry about installing your equipment.
Installation & Maintenance
How do I maintain my electric motor?
To maintain your electric boat motor at Weenav, no regular maintenance is necessary except for a periodic visual check of the exchanger. This ensures reliable operation and minimizes repair needs thanks to the robust design and reliability of the electric motor.
Coûts & Financements
How much does an electric boat motor cost?
The price of the engine varies according to the power you want for your boat as well as the type of engine.
Performance & Efficacité
What high performance electric motors are available?
We offer two types of engines; an outboard motor and an inboard motor, each engine is offered in different powers. Our most efficient inboard engine reaches 500 horsepower, while for the outboard motor reaches 300 horsepower. These options ensure optimal performance for a diverse range of marine applications.
Performance & Efficacité
What is the energy efficiency of an electric motor?
The energy efficiency of an electric motor is very high, around 90% and up to 97%. This means that this percentage of the electrical energy consumed is transformed into mechanical work, with a relatively low loss of energy in the form of heat. In comparison, heat engines have a much lower efficiency, generally between 20% and 30%, with more of the energy dissipated in the form of heat instead of being used to propel the boat.
Environnement
What are the ecological advantages of electric motors?
Electric motors offer undeniable ecological advantages by reducing local emissions of exhaust gases and particulates, by reducing the carbon footprint through the use of renewable electricity, and by minimizing noise pollution, thus maintaining marine ecosystems. Their design with fewer moving parts and simplified maintenance also contributes to reducing the overall environmental impact while meeting strict environmental standards.
Coûts & Financements
How can I finance the conversion of my professional fleet into electric motors?
You can finance the conversion of your commercial fleet with a loan from your bank or another financial institution. It is also possible to take advantage of a zero-interest loan offered by Weenav's partner organisations. In addition, several schemes are available to support your project: - GATE (Groupe d’Appui pour la Transition Énergétique) supports river operators in their energy transition efforts, particularly for the electrical retrofitting of boats. - PAMI (Programme d’Aide à la Modernisation et à l’Innovation de la flotte) finances the modernisation and electrification of commercial vessels to promote cleaner and more sustainable navigation. - EECs (Energy Saving Certificates) also make it possible to obtain grants or subsidies for energy consumption reduction projects, including the conversion of combustion engines to electric motors.
Installation & Maintenance
How long does it take to install an electric motor?
The installation time for an electric motor can vary from 2 days for small boats, to 1 month for larger ones. The installation time also depends on the type of engine chosen, the installation of an inboard will take longer than that of an outboard. This estimate takes into account the complexity of the integration, the necessary adjustments and the coordination with the shipyard.
Coûts & Financements
Are there subsidies for electric motors?
Yes, you can receive subsidies for converting your boat to electric power. The amount of these subsidies varies depending on your navigation sector and type of boat. If you navigate inland waters, you will find all the necessary information on our page dedicated to subsidies. If you operate in the maritime sector, we also have specific information for you.
Performance & Efficacité
What is the energy consumption of an electric motor?
Our electric motors range from 50 kW to 400 kW. At low speeds, consumption can drop to 10 kW, which ensures a minimum autonomy of 10 hours on any boat, depending on specific sailing conditions and battery capacity.
